We are surrounded by apocalyptic sights: a city bombed to destruction, storm -stricken coasts, a collapsed building. These are final moments of population, and culture.
Modernist approach to restoring disaster zones epouses an erasure of debris, placing modern structures instes, as if it were a blank slate. This new space is comprised of anonymous buildings, cloned-like units in an artificial arrangment. This utopian approach ignores the fact that every place has its own unique topography, its own surface containing its past: layers upon layers of civilizations and their ruins. In contrast with the immediate urge to erase the destruction and start- anew, my submission proposes to look upon the ruins of modernist construction as a possibillity to create a new space, founded on the poetic aesthetics of ruins; to find a new narrative in the scattered fragments. I wish to see wether the disaster zone can provide an aesthetic logic wich may itself form a new order, thus enabling a new organic, authentic layer to sprout. This layer is one that holds the memory of the past, thus enfolding a potential for a new spatial reality- varied and multi-layered. |
